Anurag Basu’s latest collaboration with Ranbir Kapoor is a desi version of Tintin.
Director Anurag Basu has a reliable lieutenant in cinematographer Ravi Varman. His camera tempts you to enter the world of Jagga and once you’re there, Basu ensures your stay for a longer period. Jagga Jasoos is perfect, beautiful and enjoyable film.
Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Saswata Chatterjee and Saurabh Shukla in lead roles, Jagga Jasoos is the tale of an orphan with a speech impairment, who finds a father figure in the mysterious Bagchi (Saswata Chatterjee), who grooms and mentors him before leaving him in the care of a hostel and embarking on an enigmatic mission.
It all begins in Darjeeling where a deduction expert man-child Jagga (Ranbir Kapoor) lives in a school hostel and applies his theories on friends. It’s a terrific opening as you get to know about his ideas, loneliness and ever wandering mind.
Jagga grows up into an extremely gifted amateur detective- something of a mix between Sherlock Holmes and Tintin and embarks on an adventure of his own with accident-prone reporter Shruti Sengupta (Katrina) to trace his father, who is on the trail of an arms dealer hell-bent on distributing weapons in every conflict zone. Will Jagga manage to fight the bad guys and trace his father? Watch the movie to find out…
Ranbir Kapoor carries the whole movie on his shoulders with his boyish charm, his childlike impulsiveness and the ease with which he plays the character. It’s obvious that Ranbir has poured his heart and soul in this role and the guy succeeds in giving a stellar performance as the young detective with a razor-sharp mind but a treacherous tongue. Katrina Kaif is pretty as hell, but doesn’t seem to put in much effort in the acting department. But, the girl is easy on the eyes. Saurabh Shukla doesn’t get to do much while Saswata is reliably good.
As for the movie, it’s a fantasy movie that takes away the spotlight pressure from Ranbir Kapoor. This also gives him the breather to float around the theme. If you have grown up reading Tintin comics and have loved the adventures of popular detectives like Sherlock Holmes and Feluda, you may enjoy this movie thoroughly. Just like in Tintin comics, though the treatment of the movie is quite childlike, the topics explored in the movie are quite matured - the movie deals with Naxals, arms-running, the Purulia arms drop case and a few other issues, which you won’t find in a child film. The challenge is making such a movie is to take care not to let the plot get scattered and Basu manages to do this quite commendably. In spite of the numerous issues explored through the movie, Jagga Jasoos is an engaging and enjoyable film.
One of the best part of the movie is its magical cinematography and Ravi Varman adds another feather to his cap with Jagga Jasoos, a movie that is so colourful and vibrant that you can’t help falling in love with it.
Overall, film Jagga Jasoos is worthy to watch once for its entertainment quotient and Ranbir’s enjoyable performance as the young detective.
