Pyar Ka Punchnama, Luv Ranjan’s 2011 movie, was a lovely surprise. Not only did it perfectly portray the ignominy of average men in turbulent relationships with superficial women, it did so with keen observations and razor sharp wit. The sequel, like most sequels, falls into the trap of trying to pump up the same formula on a bigger scale.
Now, the filmmaker has come up with a sequel to the story, which again deals with the same issues that had been raised in the prequel.
The film revolves around three best buddies Gogo (Kartik Aaryan), Tarun Thakur (Omkar Kapoor) and Sid (Sunny Singh), who live together in a plush Delhi apartment and generally have a great time getting drunk and joking with each other.
But, the situation changes when the three gentlemen fall in love and start dating three girls (Nushrat Bharucha, Ishita Sharma and Sonalli Sehgall), which totally turn their lives upside down. How the three friends manage to deal with love and relationships is what the sequel deals with.
Unluckily, Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, in its attempt to amplify the formula, turns what was well-meaning humour in the original into a mean-spirited gag fest.
The prequel had the same plot and though the formula worked then, we can’t help but visualize that Ranjan must have been tempted to cash on it again by making the sequel. Nonetheless the fact that the movie is a total timepass fare and has quite some funny one-liners, the movie as a whole has nothing new to offer as such.
To give credit to the director, the characters are enjoyable enough, the dialogues are funny and songs are decent enough. However, we feel that the sequel would have been more entertaining had it explored the other side of the story too, for the women hardly get to do anything, leaving the men to rant and whine about the issues they face in a relationship.
The jokes themselves are too juvenile to be amusing. The sequel is also louder than the original. The songs that were the least impressive part of Pyaar Ka Punchnama don’t get much better this time around.
Aaryan is as enjoyable as can be, though it seems like he walked in directly from the sets of the prequel. Omkar Kapoor and Sunny Singh, who have made their debuts with this movie, surprise you with an earnest and decent effort and the chemistry between the three friends comes across as real and relevant, particularly when they joking and bicker with each other. The women don’t get to do much but look beautiful, though Bharucha gets more screen time than the other two ladies.
Overall, Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 is worthy to watch once for some funny moments.
