Bollywood mogul Karan Johar has candidly expressed his frustration with being 'slotted' within the industry, emphasizing his commitment to breaking traditional barriers with his latest production, 'Homebound'. The film, which recently garnered a resounding 9-minute standing ovation at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, is being hailed as a significant step in diversifying Dharma Productions' cinematic portfolio.

In a recent interview, Karan Johar questioned the pervasive tendency to typecast filmmakers and their work. "I don't know why we get slotted," he shared, reflecting on his journey and the perception often attached to his name. Despite producing diverse projects like the anthologies "Ajeeb Daastaans" and backing critically acclaimed films like "Kapoor & Sons" and "Kill" (which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival), Johar feels a persistent struggle to shake off a certain brand image.

"Homebound," directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, starring Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, and Vishal Jethwa, stands as a testament to Johar's conscious effort to push cinematic boundaries. He admitted to consciously backing films that "every now and then, break boundaries and reshape Dharma's identity, not just riding the mainstream wave, but also reaching for deeper, more meaningful cinematic shores."

The film's success at Cannes, where it was the only Indian feature film in the Un Certain Regard section, underscores its impactful narrative. Johar's belief in Ghaywan's vision was a key factor in his decision to produce "Homebound." He stated, "There are only two things I can say. One is Neeraj. The other is Ghaywan. I was like, he always had me at hello."

"Homebound" tells the story of two childhood friends from a small North Indian village who chase police jobs for dignity, only to find their bond threatened by mounting desperation. This exploration of subaltern narratives, far removed from the urban landscapes often associated with Johar's work, resonated deeply with him. He revealed having a "meltdown" and weeping at the end of the script, despite the world of the film being distinct from his directorial endeavors.

The film's executive producer, Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese, further solidifies its international appeal and critical recognition. For Johar, "Homebound" reaching Cannes is a "cinematic dream come true," fulfilling his desire to contribute to world cinema beyond mainstream expectations.
