One of the most popular directors of the 1990s,
Indra Kumar collaborated with
Aamir Khan,
Madhuri Dixit,
Anil Kapoor, and
Ajay Devgn. He recently recalled an unexpected scene from his 1995 successful movie Raja in which the audience erupted in cheers for Sanjay Kapoor's slap of Madhuri Dixit, even those who had previously attacked the actor.
Sanjay Kapoor, who made his acting debut in Prem, struggled at the box office a few weeks prior to the release of his film Raja with the actor, Indra Kumar revealed in a media discussion. As a result, many people, including the director himself, had doubts about Kumar's movie's box office performance.
He revealed, "People started making fun of me. Even I lost hope. In my mind, I thought, 'Indra Kumar, consider this your last film. After this, let's go to Haridwar.'"
However, the movie became a big hit. Kumar attributes the project's survival to the work of the film's authors, Madhuri Dixit, and choreographer Saroj Khan. He disclosed that when he saw the movie in Mumbai's Novelty theater, he was taken aback to see the same individual who had lambasted Kapoor on his previous release clapping for him.
He recalled the incident in which Madhuri's character accuses Sanjay's on-screen brother of wrongdoing, but the actor hits her, siding with his brother instead of trusting her.
"When I was watching the movie in Novelty (theatre), the same people who were ridiculing Sanjay Kapoor for his previous film were clapping for him on the scene where he slaps Madhuri Dixit," disclosed Kumar, who witnessed the power of script at that moment.
With Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Mukesh Khanna, Dalip Tahil, Rita Bhaduri, and Himani Shivpuri in important parts, Raja was released on June 2, 1995.
