Dune 2 Director Denis Villeneuve to share his thoughts on the use of AI in Filmmaking!

With artificial intelligence becoming more widely available, filmmaking is becoming more intriguing. Denis Villeneuve, the director of Dune, says that it will never be able to equal the natural creative process of developing a movie. Villeneuve discussed the application of AI to artistic ventures in-depth with fellow director Joe Wright.

 

“The thing about cinema I love the most is this collective act of creativity, where you try to make poetry … at the end of the day it is cinema, it is storytelling,” he revealed. Additionally, the filmmaker hinted that while using machines to tell stories would be interesting in the future, it would "absolutely miss the collective act of creativity, which is so beautifully human."

 

The French-Canadian director's work on the Dune movie won him praise. He also shared details about his creative process throughout the talk, including the concept that gave rise to the enormous sandworms' design. “We were really obsessed with the idea to try to make this beast look as realistic as possible,” The filmmaker stated, noting that his biology degree was a major asset in the conceptualization process.

 

He researched many animal species with production designer Patrice Vermette to determine how the worm skin could survive the abrasive desert climate. The Dune series has its private moments in addition to its grand spectacles. “‘Part Two’ is a love story, and the whole movie structure is on that love story,” Villeneuve clarified.

 

Despite the first sense of shame or remorse, the director emphasized the value of reshooting sections when needed. The studio said in April that a third Dune sequel, based on Frank Herbert's Dune Messiah and taking place 12 years after the events of the first book, is currently in development.
