Anurag Kashyap is a rebellious Bollywood director. He has supported numerous independent voices during his lengthy career and frequently gives newcomers a chance. He is also a very outspoken individual who, in contrast to most famous people, is not afraid to express his opinions on a variety of subjects. Currently, Kashyap is preparing for the release of Haddi, in which he co-stars with Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
In a media interview, Kashyap was questioned about casting that was gender-appropriate for movies like Haddi. He spoke, "See, I have faced this thing during Sacred Games. Kukoo ki casting ke time (during Kukoo's casting), whenever we reached out to somebody who was transgender, they said no. They said no because at that time the world was not ready to accept them as they were and they were also in fear. What has happened in the post-pandemic time, people are becoming more aware. They are accepting more." The director then cited the transsexual actors in Ghoomer and Made in Heaven 2 as examples.
Kashyap clarified that casting cannot be done only for the purpose of representation because there is a need. "There is also requirement of performance. There has to be representation I understand, but the representation can't be taken for granted", he further added. In Sacred Games, the role of a transgender character named Kukoo was played by Kubbra Sait.
Nawazuddin, Anurag, Ila Arun, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Saurabh Sachdeva, Sridhar Dubey, Vipin Sharma, and Saharsh Shukla all appear in the Akshat Ajay Sharma-directed film Haddi. On September 7, the same day that Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan premieres on ZEE5, the movie is scheduled to premiere.
