Actor Vijay Varma, known for his roles in Pink, Mirzapur, and Gully Boy, is preparing for his next production, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. In a recent interview, he spoke about his vitiligo, stating that he only conceals it during film shoots to avoid attention and keep the audience focused on his performance. He also explained how it affected him personally. "I have never been spoken about loosely for my skin condition," Vijay stated. Vitiligo is a skin condition characterized by pigment loss and the appearance of white spots on the skin.
In a media interview, Vijay Varma addressed his vitiligo, saying, “I have covered it up for my movies because it just distracts, and I don’t want my audience to look at anything else except for what I want to show them, so that is the reason I hide it. But for all my public appearances, for all these years, I have never bothered to cover it up.” He also stated that he believes today's audience is understanding and responsible. Varma stated that he has not received unfavorable comments about his skin issue.
He also discussed how he dealt with his disability in an environment where physical appearance is heavily scrutinized. He highlighted that he does not consider it a big problem, but rather a cosmetic issue that does not affect the center of one's existence. Despite its exposure, he has decided not to make it a major priority. "We make it a big deal because it is something which is out there, but I have never really made a big deal out of it," he told.
When asked if his skin condition had posed any problems throughout his 12 years in the profession, Vijay Varma stated that it was a concern when he was looking for job. He felt it would become an impediment. However, now that he has achieved success and established himself in his work, this is no longer a concern for him.
Vijay Varma stars in IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack as Captain Devi Sharan, the pilot of Indian Airlines Flight 814 that was hijacked in 1999. The series, directed by Anubhav Sinha and starring Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, and Dia Mirza, will release on Netflix today (August 29, 2024). It goes into great depth about the dramatic events that led up to the hijacking.
