Based on the life of rappers Divine and Naezy, the musical drama has Ranveer Singh playing underdog rapper Murad Sheikh and Bhatt playing his love interest Safeena. The film revolves around Murad fighting off poverty and problems that come his way as he desires to become a famous rapper. Director Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy is an unconventional story that motivates and entertains in equal doses. The film is a shout-out to Mumbai’s street rappers, Naezy and Divine and Ranveer Singh has hit it out of the park with his portrayal of a talented 'Gully ka chokra.'
Gully Boy spins around Murad Ahmed, a college student who lives in Mumbai’s largest slum, Dharavi. Murad feels suffocated in his house and his gully, which feels to him like an ‘andha kuan.’ His uncooperative and unambitious father makes matter worse for him as he gets home a new bride. Murad feels shackled in his own home and he translates all his frustration and angst into poetry, as he believes, ‘Ye shabdon ka jwala hi meri bedhiyan pighlayega.’
Murad’s childhood love, Safeena is a medical student and is very possessive of her boyfriend. Safeena is supportive of his dreams and life takes a 180 degree turn for Murad, when he meets rapper MC Sher. How Murad then goes on to become India’s number one rapper forms the rest of the plot.
Ranveer Singh is super energetic in real life. He is remarkable as Gully Boy. He has got the nuances right. Ranveer is convincing as Murad and you root for his character right from the word go. This film is a one man show and Ranveer has owned each scene. He is really a very resourceful actor. Alia Bhatt’s natural act is noticeable. Her chemistry with Ranveer is enjoyable. Siddhant Chaturvedi, who has essayed MC Sher, is the find of the year. His act is impressive with a very strong screen presence. Vijay Raaz once again delivers a power-packed act as Murad’s unenterprising father and the clashes between the duos are one of the highpoints of the film. Vijay Mourya, who is the dialogue writer of the movie, has also essayed Murad’s mama and his acting is worthy to watch. Kalki is looking good as a daisy.
Director Zoya Akhtar has made a lovely movie and has extracted great performances from her stars. The first half is enthralling but the second half is little engaging. Music binds this movie together and the lyrics are supportive. The camera work is brilliant and the cinematography is remarkable.
Film Gully Boy is worthy to watch once for Ranveer’s astonishing act and Zoya’s outstanding direction.
