Film Kapoor & Sons is a drama revolving around a dysfunctional family but luckily, Kapoor & Sons proved to be a breath of fresh air in terms of story and its treatment.
Director Shakun Batra keeps it all on a tight leash and capably mines the multiple conflict points as much for the humour inherent in them as for the dramatic frisson that they generate.
The Kapoor family includes estranged brothers Arjun (Sidharth Malhotra), a struggling writer making ends meet by bartending in New Jersey, Rahul (Fawad Khan), a best-selling novelist settled in London, their parents Harsh (Rajat Kapoor) and Sunita (Ratna Pathak Shah) and the roguish grandpa Daddu (Rishi Kapoor), who stay in peaceful Coonor.
When Daddu suffers a heart attack, his two alienated grandsons fly back to their Coonor house, clueless of the tension that is brewing in the house between Harsh and Sunita. If that was not all, the two brothers too have some unclear issues, which is further complicated by the presence of Tia (Alia Bhatt), who is pally with both the brothers.
When old wounds and fresh slights collide, it leads to a rather explosive family reunion.
Sidharth and Fawad have both done a brilliant job and their sibling enmity and tension has been handled in a subtle and authentic manner. Fawad is apparently the ‘perfect son’ while Arjun is always the runner-up and the problems that are caused by this are quite relatable to those who have faced similar situations. Sidharth too is quite pleasant as the younger sibling, who is not taken much seriously by his family members.
Fawad Khan is like a dormant volcano, simmering from the inside. His capabilities as an actor are on a full display in Kapoor & Sons.
Alia Bhatt has still retained the freshness of her debut movie, but her ‘giggly girl’ character is quite monotonous and one wishes she starts exploring herself as an actress soon. Rajat Kapoor and Ratna Pathak Shah are naturally good, while Rishi Kapoor as the ‘old rogue’ grandpa is quite a pleasure to watch. Ratna Pathak as a jealous and tired housewife is a treat to watch.
In short, the story treatment is quite realistic and the story flows smoothly without any hitches. Shakun Batra has done praiseworthy work with weaving an emotional drama without resorting to any histrionics. Additionally, the fact that most of the characters are defective in some or the other way, makes them more pleasant and real for us.
But, the second half of the movie tends to drag a bit and is somewhat expectable at times. But because Batra has put his heart and soul in this film, we shall forgive him his leniencies.
The music is OK, be it the foot-tapping Kar Gayi Chul or the tuneful Bolna, Kapoor & Sons impresses you in that department too.
Film Kapoor & Sons is an emotional roller coaster. It’s a tear jerker for sure, but also features the intricacies of a middle class life.
Overall, Kapoor & Sons is worthy to watch once for a realistic story with good performances by star cast.
