Beliefs were high for Mohenjo Daro, an aspiring historical drama from Indian director Ashutosh Gowariker.
A beautiful soundtrack by Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman and a star turn by first-rate dancer and top Bollywood talent Hrithik Roshan, the movie puts a love story at the core of a story set in 2016 BC — a love-struck village man woos a priest’s comely daughter as a villainous despot threatens to destroy the mighty ancient Indus Valley metropolis.
Much-admired filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker is known for bringing heroic stories to life on the silver screen-be it Lagaan or Jodhaa Akbar and this time, the man has gone further back in time to bring to life a story about the Indus Valley Civilization with commendable results.
There can be no renunciation that Mohenjo Daro deficiencies both an adequate historical understanding of the period, and a strong movie script and plot. But, Gowariker’s attempt at creating a movie out of inadequate historical facts that historians are still debating over.
Set in 2016 BC, Mohenjo Daro is about Sarman (Hrithik Roshan), an indigo farmer from Amri, who is baffled with mysterious visions of a unicorn in a dreamy land. When Sarman makes up his mind to visit the much-talked about city 'Mohenjo Daro', his paternal uncle and aunt try to discourage him, but the gallant hero sets out to seek his fortune and meet his destiny.
In Mohenjo Daro, Sarman observes that the city is ruled by a dictatorial chief Maham (Kabir Bedi), whose greed for gold is sure to spell doom for the city. Sarman also finds love in the form of Chaani (Pooja Hegde), the daughter of the head priest, who is considered to be the symbol of Sindhu.
While courting Chaani, Sarman ends up locking horns with Maham's son Moonja (Arunoday Singh), who wants to wed Chaani and also discovers his destiny- to be the saviour of Mohenjo Daro.
Hrithik, who essays the lead role, is in top form as the polite Sarman, who transforms from a humble farmer to the leader of the people. Hrithik's remarkable presence and influential act is sure to delight his admirers, and his jaw-quivering intensity makes him a formidable hero and a force to contend with, and you just cannot take your eyes off him when he is on screen creating sizzling drama.
Pointless to say, Hrithik was the appropriate choice to play the polite Sarman and it is tough to visualize anyone else in the larger-than-life character. Pooja Hegde, who makes her Bollywood debut with this movie, is beautiful and puts up a decent act. Kabir Bedi is completely bang on as the evil Maham and his authoritative screen presence, his baritone and his sinister sneer, makes him an earnest rival to battle. Arunoday Singh also performs well as Maham's dutiful son, a strong second adversary to Sarman. The action scenes between the two are raw and convincing, and exceptionally well-choreographed by Amar Shetty.
Director Gowariker has interlaced an epic tale on a larger-than-life canvas and this film is worth watching only on the big screen. The movie is an enjoyable treat with all the elements of a classic tale and is a sheer visual delight. The veteran filmmaker is in top form and his imagination has created a world that leaves you amazed and mesmerized. The stunts by Glen Boswell of Matrix, Titanic, Mad Max and the more recent The Hobbit fame, is a first for Indian cinema and the Bakar Zokar challenge post interval is spellbinding.
The music of the movie has been composed by the 'Mozart Of Madras' A.R Rahman and unnecessary to say, the music is tonic for the ears; even the background score by Rahman takes the drama notches higher and is flawless. The special effects are good enough.
But, the one mistake that we observed was that the movie seems to be full of old-fashioned conventional characters. The story as such offers nothing new and has the same formula that has been peddled by movies over the years in Hindi Film Industry. But, what makes this film a must watch is the epic treatment and the way it has been shot to present a good, old-fashioned good versus evil tale, which never fails to strike a chord with the Indian viewers.
Overall, movie Mohenjo Daro is worthy to watch once for a larger-than-life characters and powerful performances of Hrithik Roshan and Kabir Bedi.
